As the title implies, I am in the middle of producing a short film featuring an original puppet.  I don’t want to go into too much plot detail yet, but it is about a middle aged man who’s life goes to hell.  In a fit of drunken sadness, he has a vision of his childhood friend coming to life.

I started by designing the character to be friendly and simple.

After sculpting and patterning the head, I have my shape.  I found some fur that matched what I had in mind and went to work.  I did change the facial features up slightly in position.

After building the main parts, I moved on to the spindly limbs.  Since, for the sake of the film, the character is at one point a doll, I made his plush arms removable and interchangeable with a pair with rodded hands for control and gesturing.

He’s all done, actors are in place, and we shoot in a week.  Very stressful times.
